Old Fashioned New Thang

The other night I had an Old Fashioned.

It’s a cocktail. Specifically the one that Don Draper drinks. All the time.

When I went up to order it, I knew not how to respond when the barkeep asked me whether I wanted it sweet or dry, bourbon or rye (I chose bourbon because that’s what DON has *edit: he has RYE, I am teh fail*), or what type of Bourbon I would like (is there any other type but kentucky? Isn’t that a joke stereotype?). I chose sweet, bourbon, and “whatever your recommend” (close one there….yeah), and it was pretty good if you can take your liqueur and like a good hard drink.

I don’t.

Well, not generally but I manned up and drank it with glass and only the tiniest of giggles and wild intoxicated expressions. I think if I’d smoked (apart from being thrown out) I would have basically transported the bar to Mad Men, so I call this adventure a success.

For those of you wondering how to make the Old Fashioned (one of THE classic 8 cocktails) here’s a video that makes it really sound like something special…like choosing a car or naming a child:

I really like how he says it is personal drink. You know…because when you drink it you’re an adult.

So basically, it means that:

The opposite of adult.

Becomes this:

Voted at college to be the "most likely".

Cheers.

Winter is Coming, and so are the Uncanny X-Men!

Well well well, tomorrow finally sees the release of Game of Thrones, HBO’s new awesome television series.

I’ve had something of a love affair with HBO recently (Deadwood, The Sopranos, Rome, and now The Wire) and hopefully Game of Thrones promises to continue that trend. It’s a high budget adaptation of a fantastic fantasy novel (and when I say fantasy, there IS magic, but it’s very little and is slowly introduced; no elves, dwarves, orcs), and in my mind a step forward in the right direction. Movies these days are a pretty sorry bunch, and more and more belong to a more archaic time scheme.  It might strike some of you as odd, but consider this: we live in a world where not only are we asked to devote more and more time to a multitude of tasks (in my case socializing, leisure, academic pursuits, work) but importantly we have the ability to do so. Thus, scheduled events like TV and movies are becoming more and more redundant; if it weren’t for the fact that we all can’t have massive screens (or in my case something that still isn’t a friggin square) I’d say movies would die out.

I would argue though that this has a positive effect; people no longer watch TV aimlessly because they’re bored (I don’t); with DVD TV and online streaming and downloading we can get the shows that we want, when we want them, and watch them when we want. I hope this has the effect of making shows better as they vie for our attention. As it stands Game of Thrones will be definitively be receiving my viewer ship. It deserves yours too, if you’ve got HBO watch it, if not stream it or get it online and support the DVD when it comes out. To get you excited here’s a great trailer:

For those of you wonder, the Winter is Coming title of my blog is derived from the motto of House Stark (led by Eddard Stark, portrayed by Sean Bean above). So there you go. I hope you enjoy it, I know I will. ^__^

Randomly Uncanny X-Men (which I’ve just started reading) is really great; Magneto as an X-man is awesome. Actually, more Magento…ever is good.

More of this is always good.

It also features Emma Frost, who’s pretty much my favourite X-Men. Why?

You know why.

Seriously, though. Let me tell you why I like her. The reason? She’s a strong character. Yeah, I know she wears quite an attractive uniform, and she can turn into diamonds. Oh, and is telekinetic. However, she just oozes this amazing personality of being totally in control, totally cool, she knows what she wants, she stands up for herself, and she don’t take no-shit offa no body. And I mean hey. That’s something we can all relate to and respect, and want to emulate. I know I do. And I mean, she looks fantastic, but geez what superhero doesn’t have abs of steel, etc. She looks good, and she knows it, but she doesn’t let it define her; it nuances her but never sums her up. So yeah, Emma Frost. You can see her in live action as portrayed by Januray Jones (Betty Draper from Mad Men) this June in X-Men First Class.

Ms Jones has Ms Frost all figured out. Its in the face, see?

So I hope you all enjoyed that. Goodnight!

The Amazing Mr Turner and his Music

Hey everyone!

A long time, no post as I’ve been very busy of late – and shall be for the next while as well. Nonetheless I made time to go see the amazing Mr Frank Turner at Annandale Hotel last night, and wow. He was just amazing! It’s really something special to see someone sign with such heart but also have great melodies, great hooks, and most importantly great lyrics. It’s like sometimes he reads my mind! I was right at the front, only about a metre away from him; and the whole experience was basically the best kind of sing-along you could ever imagine. So here’s to you Frank, and to those who don’t know him, this is one of his best (and I have sung it with him!):

So, you know stuff.

I think this predicts the future of gaming squeals (especially pokemon):

Recently I bought a 3DS.

This basically sums p the safety manual:

Star Trekkin

For those who don’t know I like Star Trek. Alot. I’ve watched the Original Series, and have recently watched the first 3 seasons of the next generation (and as soon as the DVDs are back on special, the other 4). Here’s some great Trek Videos.

This one is the crew of Next Gen (sans Picard) doing a comic relief skit. It’s actually really awesome. Apologies for the bad quality. (I like the way that they know Videos will be obsolete in the future).

And this is Stark Trek (TOS) as the A-Team. Good stuff.

As amusing as these videos are I think it speaks volumes to the Trek Universe and Shows as to how adaptable they are to make such awesome videos possible.

So, here’s to you Stark Trek, in all your forms.

KHAAAAAAN & some videos

So my brother and father spent the evenings meal discussing how best to rort Action Busses using the new MyWay card system. This led to me feeling like this classic scene from Stark Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:

On the theme of amusing Stark Trek Videos, this is a must:

This is a song recently shown to

And randomly, CAT LAZER BOWLING:

Somebody, tell them!

This is the very first song I bought offa the interwebs, way back when I had dial-up. It’s like an ironic indie collaboration. I think it’s a great song on it’s own.

It has a sweet video, enjoy!

A little heavy handed, but you get the point. Also good music.

Before I go I’m going to throw you a good song from Mr Frank Turner to tide you over:
